Most of us know all too well what that tell-tale tingle of the lip means. While many infections are contracted during childhood, the prevalence of the virus that causes cold sores (HSV or herpes simplex virus) increases with age at nearly 1.5% each year. So, while 20 to 40% of young adults now carry the virus, about 90% of those in their 70's do also. In 2006 about 58% of Americans were estimated to carry the virus. Studies have shown that over a quarter of people infected will have at least one cold sore/fever blister every year. That's nearly 20-million people who have at least one cold sore annually in the US alone. You are not alone.
We encourage a holistic approach to preventing cold sores which may include increasing your intake of the essential amino acid lysine (think spinach) while decreasing your intake of foods high in arginine (peanuts, chocolate). Some people find L-lysine nutritional supplements or lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) tea can help. It is easy to say that you should reduce your stress; but it usually dawns on us that we are experiencing too much stress when we notice the tell-tale tingle of a cold sore. Find what works for you - we hope it includes AlgalAid.
